HAHAHAHAAAA... CHEESE JUST CALLED AND SAID ONE OF OUR TURKEY HENS IS OFF HER EGGS!!! BUT NO CHICS?!?!?! LOTS OF BROKEN EGGS AND NO CHICS.... SO AS I "GO ON A TOWN RUN" IM GOING TO SWING UP TO OUR HOUSE... (A FORTY MINUTE DETOUR) AND CHECK THINGS OUT... HOPEFULLY THE OTHER HEN IS SITTING ON THEM... AND HER OWN EGGS... BUT WE WILL SEE. WISH ME LUCK, WELL WISH THE TURKEY CHICS LUCK!!!
UPDATE: i jammed up to the house to see what the fuck was going on.... the turkey hen was back on her eggs and i found two chic under the other hen... and twenty or so eggs! so hopefully we get more than two but at least these ladies first attempts have been fruitful so far!!!

I don't want them to die. Put them UNDER the other hen. She can't sit on both sets of eggs seperately, successfully. You have to actually place them in her nest. How do I know this? Because my darling grandmother had chickens and I've had to do it many times. It's usually best to do it when she's off the nest. Also place the scent of her nest on the eggs, don't just plop them in. If you have to put them under her while she's nesting, that's fine, just expect to be pecked! It probably won't hurt you too much, but as a little girl, it hurt like hell.

Just remember that eggs get cold very fast and have to be attended to quickly if a hen abandons them. So hurry. I'm serious. Good luck.

XO

Broken eggs and no chicks. Did something get into the hen house? Seriously.

Well, good luck with the Chicks, Dude.

Whoa!! What are you gonna do with all those chicks? If they all become chicks?

Breeze is wonderful...esp. in the kitchen. I remember a concoction we tried as teenagers. Huh. We somehow made pecan pie repulsive and inedible. That said, the lass is an all-star in the kitchen (and no doubt beyond). She can also be a crazy wench, so just know that I pre-warned you!

In regard to turkey chicks: cute (if they live). Bummer (if they die).
Otherwise, the New York T did a good piece on food in America that might satisfy the carnivore and other in all of us. It's fun and interesting. It also makes me want to carry a bigger knife in Big Sur for HQs and such things... mmmmmm

mj, save the drama for your mamma... everything was fine.

suz, no worries, we know (pretty much) what we are doing. i too spent many years on my grandmothers farm. i tell you that a "peck" from a turkey will help you to lose skin, muscle, blood, etc... these birds are extremely mean and nasty right now!

suz, the chicks had climbed under the other hen for warmth and the turkey hen who had gotten up was getting some food and water. its just not something we had seen them do!

cecile, all the chicks want to get warm and fuzzy with me!

random chick! eat them!!! we will give some to a couple of friends who also would like to start raising turkeys... and give some to the hacienda for trade. the ones we have are royal palms, the ones in the picture i posted are actually the ones we have in the coop! the picture is when we were transporting them to our property. but we are going to trade a couple for some of another breed. cross them up and get some new jeans... but inevitably we will keep some for breeding and some for eating! perhaps i should have a "name the thanksgiving turkey competition"?

turbiditity!!! yeah i bet you and cheese cooked up some stuff in the kitchen! thanks for the link, i'll check it out!!!

beast, i know it wasnt you! you are still on the hook for pinks piggy though... *follows beast home by bacon bits left behind*
